Upgrade to Odoo 20

Reach version 20 with the operation protected, because production is not touched until its converted copy has passed testing.

Odoo releases one major version a year, and version 20 came out in September 2026. A database on 19 keeps standard support until September 2028, and one on 17 or 18 can go straight to 20 without passing through 19. A database on 17 or earlier is in more of a hurry: its standard support has already ended and, under Odoo’s subscription agreement, from March 2027 it can be charged an extra 25 % on the annual price for staying on a version that is no longer covered.

What it solves

Upgrading means converting the database with its data, its apps and the custom code that extends them. With an Enterprise subscription, Odoo converts the standard apps and Studio customizations; what sets the calendar is the custom code, because a database with custom modules cannot be upgraded until their 20.0 version exists. This service makes sure that part is ready and that the change reaches production already tested.

Who it is for

Companies that already run Odoo Enterprise and want to reach version 20 with the operation protected: those on 19 planning the move with time, those still on 17 or 18 that can jump straight there, and those with custom modules or on-premise hosting, which need the most preparation.

How we work

On Odoo’s official process, whose order protects the operation: first a converted copy of the database, then the adaptation of the custom modules and the tests on that copy, and finally the production upgrade. On Odoo.sh the converted copy arrives in a staging branch, and every code change is tested there; on-premise, the infrastructure is prepared as well, because version 20 requires Python 3.12 to 3.14 and PostgreSQL 16 or later.

Quantum Garage’s developments under active maintenance are adapted to the new version as part of that maintenance. Third-party modules are adapted by whoever maintains them: under its terms and conditions, Quantum Garage does not evaluate or support third-party modules, and a database that has one without a 20.0 version waits until it exists.

What you get

The database on Odoo 20, with its custom modules adapted and tested before production changes, together with the upgrade report Odoo sends when each upgrade finishes, which summarizes the changes the new version brought. The changes in version 20 that matter most to a company operating in Mexico —the new access-rights model, the MCP server and the updated Mexican localization— are in the Odoo 20 upgrade guide.

Where it matters most

The upgrade is the same in every industry; what changes is what to test first. In a distribution company or in agribusiness issuing Carta Porte, the electronic bill of lading, version 20 lets you choose the driver on the delivery order. In retail and e-commerce the bimonthly global invoice arrives, and wherever there is custom code the new access-rights model weighs most, because it is the change that takes the most work.

The guides that explain it

The Odoo 20 upgrade guide details what changes, what it requires and how it is tested. The hosting guide explains what each option supports, and the guide on Odoo Studio or custom development, what each implies at upgrade time.

Industries where it applies most

  • AgribusinessIn agribusiness, the real cost of each hectare and the traceability a foreign buyer asks for are pieced together by hand, after the season is over.
  • ManufacturingIn a manufacturing plant, the scrap and the real cost of each order become known at month-end, when the inventory adjustment no longer explains anything.
  • E-commerceIn e-commerce the sale takes one click, and everything that comes after it, the invoice, the picking, the shipping label and the return, decides the margin.

What will it take to bring your Odoo to version 20?

The version, the hosting and the custom modules decide what Odoo converts on its own and what has to be adapted before the upgrade. Share those three facts with us and we will review what it means in your case.

Frequently asked questions

When should we upgrade to Odoo 20?

It depends on the version the database is on and how much custom code it has. A database on 19 keeps standard support until September 2028, so the move can be planned with time; one on 17 or earlier has already lost standard support and, from March 2027, Odoo’s agreement can charge it an extra 25 % on the annual price.

How much does an upgrade to Odoo 20 cost?

With Odoo Enterprise, converting the database carries no extra cost and includes the support needed to fix discrepancies in the converted database. What sets the cost of the project is what falls outside that service: adapting custom code and third-party modules without a maintenance contract, cleaning up data, testing, training and, on-premise, preparing the infrastructure.

Can we upgrade from Odoo 17 or 18 straight to 20?

Yes. Odoo allows upgrading from any version to any major version still under standard support, and 20.0 is. The documentation warns that the smaller the jump, the easier the upgrade.

What happens to our custom and third-party modules?

Odoo does not convert them, except those under a maintenance contract with Odoo, and the database cannot be upgraded until their 20.0 version exists. Quantum Garage’s developments under active maintenance are adapted as part of that maintenance; third-party modules are adapted by whoever maintains them.

Does the upgrade also move us from Community to Enterprise, or from Odoo Online to Odoo.sh?

No. Odoo’s documentation leaves edition changes and hosting changes outside version upgrades: each is a process of its own. Moving to Enterprise is planned separately, and with Enterprise the conversion to each new version is included.

Does Odoo 20 have an MCP server?

Yes. The 20.0 documentation has a page on Odoo’s MCP server, which lets an external artificial intelligence agent read or modify the database with the permissions of the user who connects it.
