Custom Odoo development

What the operation needs and Odoo does not ship, in modules designed and built by Quantum Garage's Fábrica de Disrupción.

Odoo already solves much of what a company needs, and the first step is to make the most of it. Next come the products that already exist for Odoo, such as those of Nivolty, a company in our group, and custom development comes last. A module is justified when the gap analysis finds a need that Odoo covers neither with what it ships nor through configuration.

What it solves

What the operation needs and the standard does not ship: the business rules specific to the industry, integrations with the systems the company keeps and the processes no standard app covers. Without that development, that part of the operation stays in a spreadsheet next to the ERP, which is exactly what the implementation came to close.

Who it is for

Companies that implement or run Odoo Enterprise and have an industry-specific process the standard does not cover, or that need to connect Odoo with another system that stays. The decision to build comes out of the assessment: what Odoo solves through configuration comes first.

Who builds it

Quantum Garage, from start to finish. It assesses the operation, decides with the client what gets configured and what gets built, and whatever has to be built is designed and developed by its Fábrica de Disrupción (Disruption Factory), the company’s specialized development unit.

Its engineers work on the Quantum Reactor, Quantum Garage’s own development engine, powered by artificial intelligence: AI lives at the core of the engine, and the engineering team reviews and validates all the code before it is delivered. What the client receives is software that runs the business; artificial intelligence is the power source it is built with.

What gets built

Modules on the Odoo framework —Python, OWL and PostgreSQL— for whatever the operation needs beyond the standard. Every module is tested and validated before it reaches production.

What you get

The module running in the company’s Odoo, with a limited warranty on what is delivered and, under active maintenance, kept compatible with Odoo versions, as Quantum Garage’s terms and conditions describe.

Where it runs and what it needs at each upgrade

A custom module needs Odoo.sh or on-premise hosting, such as CloudCore, Nivolty’s hosting: according to the Odoo 20 documentation, Odoo Online does not accept custom code. And like all custom code, it is adapted before every version upgrade, because Odoo does not convert it on its own.

Where it matters most

In agribusiness, the group builds Agricore, an agribusiness ERP on Odoo Enterprise, together with D1 Smart Solutions, as one team. In manufacturing, each plant has its own way of producing and controlling quality, and a process of its own can ask for more than the standard ships.

The guides that explain it

The guide on Odoo Studio or custom development explains what each option solves and what it implies at upgrade time. The hosting guide explains where a module can run, and the Odoo 20 upgrade guide, what happens to custom code with each new version.

Industries where it applies most

  • AgribusinessIn agribusiness, the real cost of each hectare and the traceability a foreign buyer asks for are pieced together by hand, after the season is over.
  • ManufacturingIn a manufacturing plant, the scrap and the real cost of each order become known at month-end, when the inventory adjustment no longer explains anything.
  • E-commerceIn e-commerce the sale takes one click, and everything that comes after it, the invoice, the picking, the shipping label and the return, decides the margin.

Frequently asked questions

Should we use Odoo Studio or a custom module?

It depends on what has to be solved and where the database runs. Studio customizes Odoo without programming —fields, views, models, automations, reports and approval rules— and stores the changes in the database; a module is code that lives in files and can reach everything the Odoo framework allows. At upgrade time, Odoo converts what was built with Studio as long as Studio stays installed, and a module is adapted by whoever maintains it.

Can custom modules be installed on Odoo Online?

No. According to the official Odoo 20.0 documentation, Odoo Online does not accept custom modules or apps from the Odoo Apps Store. An implementation with its own code is hosted on Odoo.sh or on-premise, on the Custom plan.

How much does custom development cost?

Its scope decides it: how many rules, screens and integrations it involves, which systems it connects to and how much testing it needs. It is estimated once the gap analysis has settled what Odoo does not cover, and its maintenance is contracted separately, as Quantum Garage’s terms and conditions describe.

Who owns the code that is developed?

Under Quantum Garage’s terms and conditions, unless expressly agreed otherwise in writing, the code developed specifically to solve the client’s unique problem belongs to the client once the project has been paid in full. Quantum Garage’s tools, libraries and generic components remain its own, and the client receives a perpetual, non-exclusive and non-transferable license to use them for that project.

What happens to our modules when a new Odoo version comes out?

Odoo does not convert custom code, except code under a maintenance contract with Odoo, and the database cannot be upgraded until a version of it exists for the new release. Quantum Garage’s developments under active maintenance are adapted to the covered Odoo versions as part of that maintenance.

Do you work on third-party modules or code from another provider?

No. Under its terms and conditions, Quantum Garage does not evaluate, install, audit or support third-party modules: those from the Odoo Apps Store, those from other partners or providers, and developments made directly by the client, in Python or with Studio.
